Welcome to the Stuttering Treatment and Research Trust - STARTSTART is a registered Trust established in 1995 to provide a comprehensive assessment and treatment service for people who stutter. Over the last 12 years START has expanded. In addition to services to our clients we are now also involved in research activities and provide education and information for professionals and members of the public. It is our mission to be a Centre of Excellence in all of the services we provide.
Why START?
At any one time 1% of the population stutters. This includes children, teenagers and adults. Unfortunately many myths and misconceptions about stuttering are still circulating. Public awareness about stuttering is often poor and this can lead to a general lack of tolerance and understanding. Sometimes people who stutter, or their family, do not know who to approach for help or even that effective help is available.
This is why START exists. Our aim is to increase awareness, provide accurate assessment and effective, best practice treatment for stuttering. We also aim to be involved in research to further the knowledge base about stuttering and its treatment.
